ODYSSEY PROGRAM

The Odyssey Program is a Maple Ridge – Pitt Meadows School District K-9 learning program designed to foster a three-way partnership between student, parent, and teacher. Our mission is to support all individuals in their development as successful learners, so they feel valued, motivated and have the flexibility to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.

Enrollment Procedures & Requirements

The Odyssey Program accepts applications for each school year. To qualify to enter kindergarten, a student must be five years of age as of December 31st of the enrolling year. Enrollment is limited by program capacity.

 

IN A SNAPSHOT

Odyssey provides a variety of support to help students thrive, including:

  • A individualized, inclusive, and innovative environment
  • Weekly one-to-one classes  (at Fairview Elementary or via online platform)
  • Flexible Student Learning Plan with individualized goals which align with the B.C. Curriculum
  • Optional weekly group classes with peers of the same grade level to enhance social development opportunities and to cover non-academic aspects of the curriculum including:
    o Physical & Health Education
    o Fine Arts
    o Applied Designs Skill
  • Optional field trips
  • Access to a resource lending library

 

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Teacher

  • Provides a student-centred and individualized learning experience that is flexible and meets
    student needs
  • Facilitates, challenges and encourages learners to explore and expand their skills, knowledge
    and understanding
  • Collaborates regularly with parents and students about the learning program and progress
  • Works collaboratively with parent and student to develop and maintain individualized
    learning goals
  • Provides 1-1 learning tutorial weekly to review previous learning, direct instruction as
    required and the next weeks’ learning resources and instructions
  • Guides, encourages and assesses student progress and provides meaningful feedback to
    student and parent
  • Individualizes learning expectations through adaptations and /or modifications for students
    with learning needs and provides access to district level support or when

Parent

  • Takes an active role in working with the teacher and student to develop learning plans and
    goals based on student needs, skills, interests and choices
  • Encourages and ensures their child participates in learning opportunities every week
  • Communicate regularly with the teacher regarding learning at home, resources required
  • Sets up structured and daily learning times
  • Provides a learning environment at home
  • Ensures students attend every 1-1 tutorial and submits assignments
  • Communicates regularly with the teacher

Student

  • Takes ownership of their education through exploring their passions, setting goals and
    developing personal awareness of their skills and needs
  • Ensures that assignments are completed to the best of their ability
  • Participates in planning and goal setting
  • Strives to be a motivated, active learner and celebrate successes
